Congratulations to Banook’s Ian Gaudet!

On June 1, 2019, Ian Gaudet won the overall Junior Male Athlete of the Year at the Sport Nova Scotia Support 4 Sports Awards. Last season, Ian won a gold and two silver medals at the Olympic Hopes Regatta in Poland and is a two-time Canadian Champion.

Sport Nova Scotia represents 55 Provincial Sport Organizations in Nova Scotia and each had the opportunity to select one junior and senior male and female athlete. He was nominated as the Junior Male Athlete of the Year for Canoe Kayak by the ADCKC.

Canoe Kayak (ADCKC) was the only sport organization with a top 3 finalist in every major award category!

Also congratulations to other winners and finalists from ADCKC
(L-R) Erin Schaus, Banook Canoe Club, Top 3 finalist for Official of the Year
Julia Lilley Osende, MicMac Amateur Athletic Club, winner Top Junior Female Athlete
Hannah MacIntosh, Senobe Aquatic Club, Top 3 finalist Senior Female Athlete of the Year.
Ian Gaudet, Banook Canoe Club, winner Overall Top Junior Male Athlete of the Year.

Banook’s PaddleAll Program

O Our program focuses on introducing athletes with physical or intellectual disabilities to the sport of CanoeKayak. All aged 12+ are welcome at no cost. No experience is necessary. Please contact Lucy Traves if you are interested or have any questions about the program: lucytraves21@gmail.com

Our program runs Tuesday evenings from 6:15pm-7:15/7:30pm throughout the year. We provide land training (weights, circuit training, ergometer workouts) and on water kayaking (when weather allows).

We are looking for volunteers to help coach our PaddleALL program! We are working on growing the program and with more athletes we need more coaches! If anyone is interested we will teach you what to do and how the practices work. Every bit counts, even if you’re only available one night of the summer!

Please email Lucy Traves and add your availably to this google document.

Banook Athletes to Travel to Portugal

March 13, 2019 – Bannok athletes visit the Nelo factory in Portugal

This week, Head Coach Toshko, 13 athletes and 10 parents have travelled to Portugal for this year’s winter training. Team Banook is staying at the 5 Star Montebelo Aguieira Lake Resort & Spa. The all inclusive nature of the resort allows the athletes and parents to focus on the reason they are there – training hard and having fun (plus keeping up with school work) in a dedicated training facility with all meals being looked after. One of the main attractions so far has been the tour of the new Nelo factory just outside of Porto.

A big thank you goes out to all the club members who have supported our team through volunteering to support fund raising and attending the trip as chaperones and of course cold hard cash to make these training trips possible for our athletes

Important Safety Change

Regardless of weather conditions,  any paddler U16 and under now must wear an approved PFD (life jacket) at all times while on water in training, or participating in Banook, ADCKC, or its member clubs programs.

Also, any paddler, of any age, who is unable to prove swimming proficiency as required under the Canoe Kayak Canada Code of Safety must wear a PFD at all times while on water in training, or participating in the programs of Banook, the ADCKC or its member clubs.
