Our summer programming begins on Tuesday, July 2, and our staff are ready and waiting for you! We have Paddling Coaches, Child Care and Day Camp Staff, Lifeguards and a Canteen Team prepared to do their best to ensure that everyone has a great experience with us.

For those in the Child Care and Day Camps, please go to the Gym to register your child and to drop off ALL the forms required. The Gym is upstairs – go though the tunnel and then through the right side door at the end of the tunnel and head up the stairs – we’ll be waiting for you.

And don’t forget that every Thursday from 5pm to 7pm, we have a BARBECUE at Banook for all those families in our programs. It’s a great opportunity to meet new friends, including the families of your children’s new friends, and have an inexpensive meal involving no dishes for you to clean!

We have volunteer opportunities with the BARBECUE, and our DAILY CANTEEN. We need your help and you will earn your volunteer credit. Volunteers can sign-up on our web site: https://banookcanoeclub.com/volunteer-sign-up/

The ADCKC Annual Athlete Awards will be held on Wednesday, December 5th from 6:00pm-7:30pm at Mic Mac AAC.
There will be awards from Top Male and Female in U13 and up (more details to follow).

Once again, it is time for the Christmas Tree and Wreath Sale. We have a large group of athletes working towards a winter training camp in Portugal and this is a great fundraiser to support their efforts. You can order a tree or wreath from one of our paddlers, who will be canvasing the community over the next few weeks or you can email banooktreesales@gmail.com

Banook athletes will also be operating a tree lot for two weekends; December8/9 and 15/16, from 10am-5pm each day at Banook Canoe Club. For those of you who are not familiar with the sale, you pre-order and pay for your tree or wreath–then come to the lot to pick out your tree. You can take it home yourself or we will deliver it for you.
Also, you can choose which of the two weekends you would like to select your tree. Our trees are balsam fir and are grown locally on the Eastern Shore. Our wreaths are also balsam, very full and undecorated and are made in New Germany, NS.
This year we have added a few different sizes of wreaths banooktreesales@gmail.com

Trees – 6 to 9 feet – $40 (delivery included)

14” ring – $20 (this is the size that we have had for the past few years)

16” ring – $25

18” ring – $30

24” ring – $40

Every Dec, Feb and April.
Choose from California Oranges (88 per case) – $54;
Florida Grapefruit (36 per case) – $54;
or Medium Clementines, Spain (about 90 per case) – $54.
The December order is due December 2nd, for delivery Dec 7th. $10from every case goes to the athlete.
Other fundraisers in the planning stages include a bottle Drive, Grocery Bagging, Mother’s Day flowers, a Wine Survivor event, and a Pie Sale, so staytuned for more on these!!

Paddling & Blue-Green Algae

UPDATE: This week’s U15/U13 Championships will still take place on Lake Banook regardless of the outcome of the water tests. We have installed an outdoor shower for the athletes to rinse off after their races or if they tip.

As mentioned last week, Banook Canoe Club has been in discussions with the Department of Environment regarding the presence of blue-green algae in Lake Banook.  They have advised against swimming or wading in the lake due to the potential presence of the algae throughout the entire lake.  For this reason we have modified our programming this week to ensure the safety of members.

  1. Children will still have the opportunity to paddle this week.  However, to reduce the possibility of falling into the water they will only be permitted in stable boats.  Our coaches know at this point of the summer which boats your child can paddle without tipping. Therefore, some paddlers may be limited to the more stable 2 and 4 person crew boats or the War Canoe and Dragon Boat.  As always, a shower is available on the dock to rinse off after paddling.
  2. The Kiddie Canoe and Open Wharf sessions will be cancelled until there’s no risk from exposure to the algae.
  3. Our beach will remain closed to swimming.

We realise that some parents may be concerned about their child being on the water at this time. The decision regarding your child’s participation in any on water activity is up to you.  If you would rather your child stay on land during the time when their group is out on the water, please notify their coach prior to practice.
If your preference is to not have your child on the water, the coaches will have other activities planned to keep your child entertained and active.
We thank you for your patience and understanding as we deal with the extraordinary situation we are currently experiencing on Lake Banook.  We will provide another update once we have discussed the results of the latest water test (expected Aug 23) with the Department of Environment.

The Pam-Am Canoe Championships are coming!

Starting around September 7th, members will see changes happening on the lake and at the club as the Pan-Am Championships setup begins. As previously mentioned in the weekly newsletters, the Banook Canoe Club (BCC) will transform into the Pan-Am athletes village to host over 300 of the top competitors, coaches and trainers from approx. 16 countries in North, Central, and South America.

During the week of competition, we are looking for volunteers to help with the logistics of transforming the BCC to host the Pam-Am Championships and to assist with a daily lunch service. Interested BCC members can sign-up online and earn volunteer credits.

Visit our dedicated Pan-Am Championships web page to stay informed. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Steve Pottie, Manager BCC.

Dobre doshal! to Toshko!

Dobre doshal! to Toshko!

The day is finally here. We would like to welcome Coach Toshko Kalpakov to our Banook family.  Toshko has arrived via Scotland and will be familiarizing himself with our Banook programs, athletes and families over the next few weeks.
He was already even on the docks lending a hand first thing this morning in fact!

Make him feel welcome by introducing yourself and welcome him to Canada with a “Dobre doshal!” (welcome phrase in Bulgarian). His English is excellent in case you are wondering.

Our summer paddling programs will continue under the leadership of Jill, Angela, Jake, Jeremy, Will, Ryan, Sarah and Emma. We hope will progress forward with strong finishes through the remaining August regattas as Jill and Jake head our team at Nationals (25 Banookers strong) in Ottawa starting August  25.

Thank you
