Summer 2019 – Week 1

Posted on by Banook News in

We’ve had our first week of  Summer programming and while it was hectic with lots of new staff and new members and others, it was smooth sailing all the way! The sun arrived and all of us that were praying for some sun over the last month were debating how wise that was – BOY, IT WAS HOT!

Our first Thursday Night BBQ was really well attended and folks got a chance to have a relaxing meal with their families and were able to meet others involved in Banook. Hopefully, more can join us on future Thursdays from 5pm to 7pm. We can really use some help at these barbecues, so to use some of your volunteer hours, click here –

As a safety measure, we had our beach water tested and it passed without any issues. As well, I had the province’s Environment Department drop by to evaluate our water and any algae in the area, and they assured us that things are good.

There is still time to renew your membership for 2019/2020, become a member for the first time, or sign-up for summer programming.  There are still a few spots left in our various programs, so register quickly! Use the links below to make your choice:

After a full week of canteen use at the new location in the Hall, I’m pleased to advise that the change has been well-received, as have our new menu items. Please drop by and check it out! And if you would like to use some of your volunteer hours to help at the canteen, here’s the link –

Call for Volunteers! – PaddleALL Program.
We are looking for volunteers to help coach our PaddleALL program! We are working on growing the program and with more athletes we need more coaches! If anyone is interested, practices are Tuesday and Thursday nights from 6:15pm-7:15pm, we will teach you what to do and how the practices work. Every bit counts, even if you’re only available one night of the summer!
Please email Lucy Traves at: and add your availably to this google document:

For more information about the program check out the Banook website or email Lucy Traves.

Come out and bring a friend to our recreational war canoe races! Our first race will be Thursday July 11th at 6:30pm before grabbing some grub at the BBQ! Free for members and a $5 drop in fee for non-members, join us to make some memories while participating in 100m sprint races!!
Please arrive between 6:00pm and 6:30pm to sign up and get the boats in the water.

The swimming lesson schedule has been posted outside of the lifeguard office and is also available online. Lessons will begin this Monday and run Monday – Thursday for three weeks (July 25th). At the end of the term instructors will give the swimmers a progress report that will indicate whether or not they have completed the level (there will also be badges of course :)) We are also hoping to offer a Bronze Medallion and Bronze Cross course on the weekends of July 27-28th and August 17-18 respectively. These courses are designed to prepare swimmers for the National lifeguard course. In these courses participants will learn the in’s and out’s of emergency first aid as well as continue to work on their swimming skills while learning new rescue techniques and safety procedures. These courses are open to anyone 13 or older as well as anyone who has completed their Bronze Star. The cost of the course will be 150$ which includes a lifesaving manual. In order to run these courses a minimum number of 6 people must be registered so please contact our head lifeguard Jesse Friesen at if you are interested.
