July 11 – Club News

Summer at the Banook Canoe Club is in full swing, and it looks like we’re off to a great start.

Children and adults alike are taking advantage of our canteen (open Monday to Friday from 10am to 3pm). After the first week, we made some minor adjustments based on demand, and we’ll be able to serve you even better.

Thursday’s BBQ
Our Thursday night BBQ (5pm to 7pm) is expected to be busy with another sunny forecast.  We are also extending the invitation to our non-member Day Camp families too! Tomorrow, our athletes will be fundraising by selling a tasty dessert at our BBQ – so save room for it!

We’ll also have lifeguards on duty, cash bar, and open wharf for those members wanting to try a boat or kiddie canoe.
$10 Combo meals – hamburger or hotdog, salad, drink, and dessert!

Bottle Drive
And speaking of Banook athletes, our high-performance athletes will be having a bottle drive this Saturday, July 14, 8:30 – 12:30. They’ll be using the Banook parking lot to coordinate the bottles/ sort etc. Members can drop off bottles that morning at the club if they have any to contribute.

U15 Dance
And another event the high-performance athletes are running is a U15 Dance on Thursday, July 19 from 7pm to 9:30pm. Banook athletes, Emily P and Carys M, are organizing it. Cost is $5 for Banook members and $7 for non-Banook members, who MUST be signed in by a Banook member. The doors open at 7pm and entry will be closed at 8pm. They’ll have a canteen and a great playlist, so if you’re U15, plan on being there.

New Lost and Found Policy
With so many people around, Banook’s Lost and Found pile grows rapidly over the summer. Please label everything your child brings to Banook and please make sure you check the Lost and Found regularly for items your child may have left behind.  Unclaimed clothing items that do not have name labels are washed and will be sold at Banook’s BBQ’s on August 2 and August 23.  Proceeds from this sale go to supporting the athletes who will travel to Nationals in Quebec at the end of the summer.  July 26 will be the last date to claim items prior to the August 2 sale and August 16 is the last date to claim prior to the August 23 sale.   Any leftover items after the sales will be donated to Value Village.

Canoe Polo
Canoe polo is up and running and it looks like a lot of fun. It involves passing and blocking a ball in an effort to score on the other team’s net. The Banook program will run to August 17th for two evenings per week from 6:30pm until 8:00pm. The registration is open for participants 15 years of age and older.

Be a Volunteer
Please go to our website to register for upcoming events. You’ll reduce your membership dues, feel good about volunteering and meet other members, too.

The Banook Canoe Club is the place to be this summer – we look forward to seeing you at our ‘cottage in the city’.

Banook Canoe Club

Just a reminder of placing your singlet order if you need one by tomorrow morning. If you plan on sharing one, this will not work well for crew boats if you are in the same boat and will not work for war canoe.

ADCKC/CKC regulations require those who are 11 years old as of January 1st, 2018 and older to wear a designated club singlet. You will need one for the U13/U15 Championships August 23-25. http://adckc.ca/Regattas/Regatta-Schedule/

All those UNDER 11 years old DO NOT need a Banook singlet but must wear a red t-shirt at regattas. If you are under 11 and still want one then please do order one.

For the next month while you wait for your singlet, please wear a red t-shirt to regattas if you do not have the singlet pictured below as we have permission from ADCKC. There are no exceptions at National events, you must wear one of these when racing.

Banook has a few of these, but I don’t think we have enough for everyone. This year we are not going to make a large expensive order and end up not having enough of the right size and many of the wrong sizes. We are asking you to go onto this google document link and enter your name, phone number and put a big “X” in the square matching the size of the singlet your child requires.

Please keep in mind it is NOT a requirement for U11’s to wear singlets, they can wear a red T-shirt on their competitions days. If you are under 11 and still want one then please do order one.

Prices: Youth $42 and Women/Men $44. Please make payments to the Banook office. It will take 4 weeks from the time we place the order.

We are in a bit of a time crunch for you to purchase one of these singlets and need you to enter this data by tomorrow, July 16th at 1200. After this we will assume you already have one or do not need one. If your athlete is unsure of what size they require then please see me or Tiaro in the office and they can try on the different sizes we do have tomorrow morning.

Coaches will be following up with the athletes on Monday to remind everyone to enter their information if a singlet is needed.

As always if you have any questions please come see me or Tiaro in the Banook Office or send us an email.

Thank you,

Stephen Pottie
