Banook Weekly Update – July 6, 2018

Banook Canoe Club is wrapping up its first week of summer activity and it’s been a GREAT week! Our Camps have been full, with each child enjoying lots of opportunity to have fun paddling, swimming, meeting new friends, sampling our treats at the canteen, and making memories that will last a lifetime!

Our camps are full of smiles – the children are so excited and really valuing their experiences at the lake. It’s wonderful to see them learning new things and making new friends after only a few days. The camp counselors, the coaches and the lifeguards are all part of Banook summer team doing their all to make each child create positive memories of summer 2018.

Our canteen opened on Tuesday to rave reviews. We’ve lowered some prices from last year, and many people have established ‘tabs’ to make it easier to use the canteen throughout the week. It’s open 10am to 3pm Monday to Friday. Check out our daily specials!

Last night, our first Thursday Night Family Barbeque was very well attended. We still have lots of yummy food for more members to join us next Thursday (July 12) from 5pm to 7pm. There will be lifeguards on duty and Open Wharf for children to use the boats under the supervision of our coaches. We encourage all our members and also our camp families to drop by and enjoy an opportunity to mingle.

Weddings, Weddings, and more Weddings!

In July, we’ve bookings every weekend, including a weekend triple-header – a Friday wedding and reception, a Saturday wedding and reception, and wrapping up with a wedding reception on Sunday.

Pan-Am Championships

Lake Banook will be the site for the Pan-Am Sprint Canoe Championships from September 13-16, 2018, and we’re excited that Banook Canoe Club will be the venue for the ATHLETE’S VILLAGE!

In newly-refurbished Hall, we’ll be feeding as many as 350 athletes and their support crews (coaches, administrators, etc.) for five days – Wednesday to Sunday. Our gym will be used for Health Services such as Physiotherapy and Massage Therapy for the athletes. Some boat bays will be used to store the boats from the competing countries. We’ll need volunteers to assist with serving the buffet-style lunches, which will be a great way to experience the moment. All in all, it’s going to be an exciting time on Lake Banook!!

Annual General Meeting + Awards Dinner

Two Banook Canoe Club events you should put on your calendar are the Athlete’s Award Dinner (September 23) and the AGM (September 26). At our AGM, we’ll elect our Board members for 2018/2019, so if you’d like to either nominate a person or stand for a position, please contact Charlene Moore (BCC Board Memeber) charlene.moore@nslegalaid.ca. Board meetings take place the first Wednesday of every month at 6pm in the Banook Hall. All currently registered members are welcome to attend.

Canoe Polo

Canoe polo is a fast and fun activity played in white water kayaks. It involves passing and blocking a ball in an effort to score on the other team’s net. Check out the cool pics on Facebook of Team Canada at the world championships. https://www.facebook.com/canoepolocanada/.

The Banook program will run for 8 weeks from June 25th to August 17th for two evenings per week from 6:30pm until 8:00pm. The registration is open for participants 15 years of age and older.

The Banook Canoe Club is the place to be this summer – I look forward to seeing you at our ‘cottage in the city’.

Banook Canoe Club

Just a reminder of placing your singlet order if you need one by tomorrow morning. If you plan on sharing one, this will not work well for crew boats if you are in the same boat and will not work for war canoe.

ADCKC/CKC regulations require those who are 11 years old as of January 1st, 2018 and older to wear a designated club singlet. You will need one for the U13/U15 Championships August 23-25. http://adckc.ca/Regattas/Regatta-Schedule/

All those UNDER 11 years old DO NOT need a Banook singlet but must wear a red t-shirt at regattas. If you are under 11 and still want one then please do order one.

For the next month while you wait for your singlet, please wear a red t-shirt to regattas if you do not have the singlet pictured below as we have permission from ADCKC. There are no exceptions at National events, you must wear one of these when racing.

Banook has a few of these, but I don’t think we have enough for everyone. This year we are not going to make a large expensive order and end up not having enough of the right size and many of the wrong sizes. We are asking you to go onto this google document link and enter your name, phone number and put a big “X” in the square matching the size of the singlet your child requires.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1mI2qsCdv7NRMJuwmrjL8BPDYl14ysFDLD45nHoeBMjk/edit?usp=sharing

Please keep in mind it is NOT a requirement for U11’s to wear singlets, they can wear a red T-shirt on their competitions days. If you are under 11 and still want one then please do order one.

Prices: Youth $42 and Women/Men $44. Please make payments to the Banook office. It will take 4 weeks from the time we place the order.

We are in a bit of a time crunch for you to purchase one of these singlets and need you to enter this data by tomorrow, July 16th at 1200. After this we will assume you already have one or do not need one. If your athlete is unsure of what size they require then please see me or Tiaro in the office and they can try on the different sizes we do have tomorrow morning.

Coaches will be following up with the athletes on Monday to remind everyone to enter their information if a singlet is needed.

As always if you have any questions please come see me or Tiaro in the Banook Office or send us an email.

Thank you,

Stephen Pottie
